How To Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell.
In the first How to Train Your Dragon book Hiccup must lead ten novice Vikings in their initiation into the Hairy Hooligan Tribe. They have to train their dragons or be banished from the tribe forever!
Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third is a smallish Viking with a longish name. Hiccup's father is chief of the Hairy Hooligan tribe which means Hiccup is the hope and the heir to the Hairy Hooligan throne - but most of the time Hiccup feels like a very ordinary boy, finding it hard to be a Hero.
Hiccup does not look or act like the other Vikings in his tribe. Nobody had high expectations from Hiccup until he captures the most deadly and dangerous dragon of them all: the Night Fury.

We will start Year 5 by extending our learning about Place Value. We will then be moving this learning forward to help us with our Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division knowledge where we will be using both metal and written methods to solve given questions.
Geography/ History
History - Anglo Saxons: Was the Anglo-Saxon era really a dark age?
Our learning this half term will have a History focus. We will be learning all about The Anglo-Saxons. We will build up our knowledge each week to help us to decide if The Anglo-Saxon age was a dark era or not. We will begin by finding out who The Anglo-Saxons were and why they decided to settle in Britain. We will then use archaeological evidence to help us to understand how they lived whilst here. By looking at the Staffordshire Hoard, we will work out its significance and what it tell us about Anglo-Saxon life before looking at other documents about them and their limitations. This should then allow us to build our own conclusions about if this was a dark age or not.
Science
Earth and Space.
Throughout this topic of learning we will describe the movement of Earth and the other planets in relation to The Sun and describe the movement of The Moon in relation to The Earth. We will look at the shape of the planets and discuss The Earth’s rotation to describe how we get day and night.

PHSE/RSE – Health and Wellbeing: What makes up a person’s identity?
This half term, we will understand how to recognise and respect similarities and differences between people and what they have in common with others. We will know that there are a range of factors that contribute to a person’s
identity (e.g. ethnicity, family, faith, culture, gender, hobbies, likes/dislikes) Children will understand how individuality and personal qualities make up someone’s identity and will discuss stereotypes and how they are not always accurate, and can negatively influence behaviours and attitudes towards others. By the end of the half term, children will know how to challenge stereotypes and assumptions about others
RE - What does it mean if Christians believe God is holy and loving?
In RE, we will be looking at Christianity and what it means if Christians say that God is holy and loving. We will do this by looking at different biblical texts and linking them to what Christian’s believe.
Art/ D & T/ Music
Art – Our artist focus is William Morris
In Art, we will be focussing on William Morris, selecting and using techniques to complete art in the style of William Morris. Children will make textile pieces, design prints in the style of William Morris and discuss and evaluate their own work and that of others
D&T – Our focus is Bridges
In D&T we will be researching and building our own bridges. We will be finding out what the different types of bridges are, and which style we should adopt to make our bridges the sturdiest. We will compete to see who can make the sturdiest bridge to hold a weight.
Music – Livin’ on a prayer by Bon Jovi
In Music, we will be listening and appraising ‘Livin on a Prayer’ by Bon Jovi.
Spanish
Numbers 21-30 and presenting myself
This half term, children will learn to repeat and say the numbers 21-30. They will also recognise and write the numbers 21-30 and count to 30 independently in Spanish.
Children will revisit how to say their name and ask another person their name. We will know how to greet a partner formally and ask: How are you? Children will also revisit feelings, be able to say please and thank you in Spanish and use ‘soy’ to say how old they are.
Children will continue to broaden their vocabulary and understanding e.g. by using a dictionary
PE
Our sport focus will be ‘Invaders’’ in which we will study the sport Netball.
Our fitness focus will be ‘Boot Camp’ and we will participate in a range of circuit-based activities and understand the reason for doing them.
Our health focus will be ‘Healthy Body: Inside and Out.’ Children will look at our muscles, organs and joints.
