Journey to Jo’burg by Beverley Naidoo
Mama lives and works in Johannesburg, far from the village thirteen-year-old Naledi and her younger brother, Tiro, call home. When their baby sister suddenly becomes very sick, Naledi and Tiro know that they need to bring their mother back in order to save their sister’s life. Bravely, they set off on the long journey to the big city to find Mama. It isn’t until they finally reach Jo’burg that they see up close what life is like for black citizens across South Africa—and begin to really question the unfair and dangerous laws of apartheid.
During this half term, the children will be completing two different genres of writing. They will be writing a balanced argument to discuss and a letter to inform. We will also be looking at Free Verse poetry.

This half term, the children will be looking at position and direction. They will then spend time focussing on problem solving with coordinates before finishing the year looking at measurement. Within this topic, the children will convert between different units of measure, including time and find the volume and capacity of cubes and cuboids.

Geography - Journeys: Where does all of our ‘stuff’ come from?
As part of our Geography focus during Summer 2, children will learn about Journeys and will try to answer the question: Where does all of our ‘stuff’ come from? The children will learn about journeys with a specific focus on trade. Children will start by recognising that our food and clothes come from all over the world. We will look at how each type of fruit will only grow in a particular climate and in a particular season and how clothes can be produced fairly and sustainably. We will look at products that are produced in our local areas before finally being able to explain the journey a product goes on to reach a person’s home.

Properties and Changes of Materials
Our Science learning this half term will continue to be ‘Properties and Change of Material.’ In our learning this half term we will be looking at the uses for everyday materials by completing a variety of different experiments. We will be looking at reversible changes of state. We will also be looking at how changes can result in the formation of a new material and that thins change is not usually reversible.

A Day in London
During our day in London, children will experience the sights and main attractions of our capital city aboard an open top bus. We will venture to Buckingham Palace and take a ride on the London Eye; making our very own journey!

PHSE/RSE – Living in the Wider World: What jobs would we like?
This half term, children will know that there are a broad range of different jobs and people often have more than one during their careers and over their lifetime. Children will understand that some jobs are paid more than others and some may be voluntary (unpaid); knowing about the skills, attributes, qualifications and training needed for different jobs. We will discuss that there are different ways into jobs and careers, including college, apprenticeships and university and know how people choose a career/job and what influences their decision, including skills, interests and pay. We will also know how to question and challenge stereotypes about the types of jobs people can do
RE - What matters most to Humanists and Christians?
In RE, children will be identifying and explaining beliefs about why people are good and bad (e.g. Christian and Humanist) and will make links with sources of authority that tell people how to be good (e.g. Christian ideas of ‘being made in the image of God’ but ‘fallen’, and Humanists saying people can be ‘good without God’)

Art – Our artist focus is Henry Moore
In Art, we will continue to explore great artists. During the Summer term, children will be basing their work on the artist Henry Moore; looking at shape, form, model and joining materials in order to make sculptures in his style of work.
D&T – What could be healthier?
In D&T our learning will centre around cooking and nutrition. Children will understand where food comes from and the term ‘healthy’. Children will adapt a traditional recipe of spaghetti Bolognese in order to complete a food product.
Music – Reflect, Rewind and Replay
In Music, we will be reflecting on our learning from this year. We will be recapping on the songs that we have learnt about this year and comparing and contrasting them using the correct musical terminology.

Our sport focus will be ‘Nimble Nets’. Children will identify and apply techniques for hitting a tennis ball, for ground strokes and volleys as well as being able to use an overhead serve and the correct selections of shots within a scored game of tennis.

Street Child by Berlie Doherty
Jim Jarvis is a runaway. When his mother dies, he is all alone in the workhouse and desperate to escape. But London in the 1860s is a dangerous and lonely place. Jim faces a constant battle to survive. Just as he finds some friends, he is snatched away and made to work for the remorselessly cruel Grimy Nick, constantly guarded by Nick’s vicious dog, Snipe. Will Jim ever be free?
During this half term, the children will be completing two different genres of writing. They will be writing a narrative and a piece of persuasive writing.

History - Journeys: What makes people go on a journey?
As part of our History focus during Summer 1, children will learn about Journeys and will try to answer the question What makes people go on a journey? To begin with we will be looking at why people undertake journeys. We will then look at significant individuals like Walter Raleigh who made voyages during the Tudor times as well as looking at the journey of the Titanic; understanding why the Irish 3rd class passengers travelled on the Titanic. To finish we will learn all about the Empire Windrush and understand why refugees risk their lives making journeys today.
Science
Properties and Changes of Materials
Our Science learning this half term is ‘Properties and Changes of Materials.’ As a class we will be comparing and grouping together everyday material based on their properties including hardness, solubility, transparency, conductivity and response to magnets. We will look at how some materials will dissolve in liquid to form a solution and describe how to recover a substance from a solution. This will build on our prior learning when we learnt about ‘Uses of everyday materials.’

Children will step back in time to discover what life was like during the Victorian era. This will link to our learning and discussions surrounding our love of reading text – Street Child.

PHSE/RSE – Relationships: How can drugs common to everyday life affect health?
This half term, children will know how drugs common to everyday life (including smoking/vaping - nicotine, alcohol, caffeine and medicines) can affect health and wellbeing. Children will know that some drugs are legal (but may have laws or restrictions related to them) and other drugs are illegal. We will discuss how laws surrounding the use of drugs exist to protect them and others and how people can prevent or reduce the risks associated with them.
Children will know how organisations help people to stop smoking and the support available to help people if they have concerns about any drug use; knowing how to ask for help from a trusted adult if they have any worries or concerns about drugs.
RE - How do Christians decide how to live? ‘What would Jesus do?’
In RE, children will be learning about Christianity. We will be discussing how Christians decide how to live following what Jesus would do. We will be looking at different texts from the bible such as teachings, parables, narratives and gospels to answer the question.

Our fitness focus will be ‘Fitness Frenzy’ and we will complete circuits and perform a sequence of steps in time with the music through a boxercise routine. Children will understand why fitness is good for health and wellbeing and will identify techniques to improve balance, core strength and co-ordination.
Our health focus will be ‘Germ Busters!’ Children will explain the importance of personal hygiene and ways to keep our bodies clean as well as recognising signs of ill health and recall strategies to help get better. During this half term, children will be learning all about the author of the Harry Potter books, J.K. Rowling, and writing a biography all about her life. The children will then write their own balanced argument and will also be looking at Regna poetry.

As part of our Geography focus during Spring 2, children will use their map reading skills to locate the Alpine region and the countries in which it is located; naming and locating some key topographical features of the UK and our own region. We will understand that local people will have differing opinions about change to their region, and will try to explain some ways in which development can be sustainable. Children will understand that regions change over time and that change is continual and we will discuss change that is happening in the local area and how it might change in the future. This unit builds on previous work the children have done on investigating their local area and other regions of the UK earlier this year.

Our Science learning this half term will begin by describing the differences in life cycles of a mammal, an amphibian, an insect and a bird. Children will then describe the life process of reproduction in some plants and animals.

Harry Potter Studios
Children will immerse themselves into the Wizarding World of Harry Potter as we step behind the scenes and into the actual sets used in the films. We will be visiting Privet Drive as well as entering the great hall of Hogwarts. This visit links to our ‘for the love of reading,’ text and the work that we are doing in our English lessons.

This half term, children will know about the different types of relationships people have in their lives, know how friends and family communicate together and how the internet and social media can be used positively. Children will discuss how knowing someone online differs from knowing someone face-to-face and will know how to recognise risk in relation to friendships and keeping safe. We will learn about the types of content that is safe to share online; ways of seeking and giving consent before images or personal information is shared with friends or family and know how to respond if a friendship is making them feel worried, unsafe or uncomfortable. By the end of the term, children will know how to ask for help or advice and how to respond to pressure, inappropriate contact or concerns about personal safety
RE - Why is the Torah so important to Jewish people?
In RE, children will be discussing why the Torah is so important to Jewish people and will be able to identify and explain Jewish beliefs about God. Children will be able to give examples of some texts that say what God is like and will be able to explain how Jewish people interpret them.

In our love of reading text for Spring 1, it's one giant leap for all boy-kind in Frank Cottrell Boyce's out-of-this-world story: Cosmic.
Liam is too big for his boots. And his football strip. And his school blazer. PHSE/RSE – Health and Wellbeing - How can we help in an accident or emergency?
This half term, children will know how to carry out basic first aid including for burns, scalds, cuts, bleeds, choking, asthma attacks or allergic reactions. Children will understand that if someone has experienced a head injury, they should not be moved and they will know when it is appropriate to use first aid and the importance of seeking adult help. Children will understand the importance of remaining calm in an emergency and providing clear information about what has happened to an adult or the emergency services.
RE - Why do Christians believe that Jesus is the Messiah?
In RE, children will be able to explain the place of Incarnation and Messiah within the ‘big story’ of the Bible. They will identify Gospel and prophecy texts, using technical terms and will be able to explain connections between biblical texts. Pupils will show how Christians put their beliefs about Jesus’ Incarnation into practice in different ways in celebrating Christmas and will weigh up how far the idea of Jesus as the ‘Messiah’ – a Saviour from God – is important in the world today and, if it is true, what difference that might make in people’s lives, giving good reasons for their answers.

The Chronicles of Narnia- The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis
When the Pevensie children - Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy - step through a wardrobe door in the strange country house where they are staying, they find themselves in the land of Narnia. Frozen in eternal winter, Narnia is a land of snow and pine forests, and its creatures are enslaved by the terrible White Witch.

History - Vikings: Would Vikings do anything for money?
We will be learning all about The Vikings and specifically trying to answer the question of ‘Would Vikings do anything for money?’ To answer this, we will be looking at different accounts of raids that took place at Lindisfarne and looking at what life was like for the Vikings in their home land which made them want to leave. This will be followed by studying about when, where and why they decided to settle in Britain. We will then look at Alfred the Great to see if he deserved to be called a great before looking at quality of the evidence, we have about the Viking times. We will bring our learning to life by taking part in a Viking workshop.

Our Science learning this half term we will be looking at the changes that humans go through as they grow from babies through to old age. Within this we will be learning about puberty and explaining the different stages of growth and development.

In RE, will be learning about what it means to be a Muslim in Britain today. To do this we will be looking at Muslim beliefs about the prophet and the Qu’ran and how they put their beliefs in to practice every single day.

How To Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell.
In the first How to Train Your Dragon book Hiccup must lead ten novice Vikings in their initiation into the Hairy Hooligan Tribe. They have to train their dragons or be banished from the tribe forever!
Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third is a smallish Viking with a longish name. Hiccup's father is chief of the Hairy Hooligan tribe which means Hiccup is the hope and the heir to the Hairy Hooligan throne - but most of the time Hiccup feels like a very ordinary boy, finding it hard to be a Hero.
Hiccup does not look or act like the other Vikings in his tribe. Nobody had high expectations from Hiccup until he captures the most deadly and dangerous dragon of them all: the Night Fury.

We will start Year 5 by extending our learning about Place Value. We will then be moving this learning forward to help us with our Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division knowledge where we will be using both metal and written methods to solve given questions.
Geography/ History
History - Anglo Saxons: Was the Anglo-Saxon era really a dark age?
Our learning this half term will have a History focus. We will be learning all about The Anglo-Saxons. We will build up our knowledge each week to help us to decide if The Anglo-Saxon age was a dark era or not. We will begin by finding out who The Anglo-Saxons were and why they decided to settle in Britain. We will then use archaeological evidence to help us to understand how they lived whilst here. By looking at the Staffordshire Hoard, we will work out its significance and what it tell us about Anglo-Saxon life before looking at other documents about them and their limitations. This should then allow us to build our own conclusions about if this was a dark age or not.
Science
Earth and Space.
Throughout this topic of learning we will describe the movement of Earth and the other planets in relation to The Sun and describe the movement of The Moon in relation to The Earth. We will look at the shape of the planets and discuss The Earth’s rotation to describe how we get day and night.

PHSE/RSE – Health and Wellbeing: What makes up a person’s identity?
This half term, we will understand how to recognise and respect similarities and differences between people and what they have in common with others. We will know that there are a range of factors that contribute to a person’s
identity (e.g. ethnicity, family, faith, culture, gender, hobbies, likes/dislikes) Children will understand how individuality and personal qualities make up someone’s identity and will discuss stereotypes and how they are not always accurate, and can negatively influence behaviours and attitudes towards others. By the end of the half term, children will know how to challenge stereotypes and assumptions about others
RE - What does it mean if Christians believe God is holy and loving?
In RE, we will be looking at Christianity and what it means if Christians say that God is holy and loving. We will do this by looking at different biblical texts and linking them to what Christian’s believe.
Art/ D & T/ Music
Art – Our artist focus is William Morris
In Art, we will be focussing on William Morris, selecting and using techniques to complete art in the style of William Morris. Children will make textile pieces, design prints in the style of William Morris and discuss and evaluate their own work and that of others
D&T – Our focus is Bridges
In D&T we will be researching and building our own bridges. We will be finding out what the different types of bridges are, and which style we should adopt to make our bridges the sturdiest. We will compete to see who can make the sturdiest bridge to hold a weight.
Music – Livin’ on a prayer by Bon Jovi
In Music, we will be listening and appraising ‘Livin on a Prayer’ by Bon Jovi.
Spanish
Numbers 21-30 and presenting myself
This half term, children will learn to repeat and say the numbers 21-30. They will also recognise and write the numbers 21-30 and count to 30 independently in Spanish.
Children will revisit how to say their name and ask another person their name. We will know how to greet a partner formally and ask: How are you? Children will also revisit feelings, be able to say please and thank you in Spanish and use ‘soy’ to say how old they are.
Children will continue to broaden their vocabulary and understanding e.g. by using a dictionary
PE
Our sport focus will be ‘Invaders’’ in which we will study the sport Netball.
Our fitness focus will be ‘Boot Camp’ and we will participate in a range of circuit-based activities and understand the reason for doing them.
Our health focus will be ‘Healthy Body: Inside and Out.’ Children will look at our muscles, organs and joints.
