Journey to Jo’burg by Beverley Naidoo
“Mma lives and works in Johannesburg, far from the village thirteen-year-old Naledi and her younger brother, Tiro, call home. When their baby sister suddenly becomes very sick, Naledi and Tiro know that they need to bring their mother back in order to save their sister’s life. Bravely, secretly, they set off on the long journey to the big city to find Mma. It isn’t until they finally reach Jo’burg that they see up close what life is like for black citizens across South Africa—and begin to really question the unfair and dangerous laws of apartheid.”
During this half term, the children will be completing two different genres of writing. They will be writing a balanced argument to discuss and a letter to inform.
White Rose Maths
This half term, the children will be looking at position and direct. They will then spend time focussing on negative numbers before finishing the year looking at measurement. Within this topic, the children will convert between different units of measure and find the volume of cubes and cuboids.
Geography/ History
Our focus this half term will be on Geography. The children will learn about journeys with a specific focus on trade. By the end of the half term, the children should be able to answer the question, “Where does all of our stuff come from?” To help the children to answer this, we will start by recognising that our food and clothes come from all over the world. We will look at how each type of fruit will only grow in a particular climate and in a particular season and how clothes can be produced fairly and sustainably. We will look at products that are produced in our local areas before finally being able to explain the journey a product goes on to reach a person’s home.
Science
Our topic for Science this half term will continue to be ‘Properties and Change of Material.’ In our learning this half term we will be looking at the uses for everyday materials by completing a variety of different experiments. We will be looking at reversible changes of state. We will also be looking at how changes can result in the formation of a new material and that thins change is not usually reversible.
Education Visit
This half term, we will be going on a visit to London. During this visit, the children will go on a tour of The Tower of London and a cruise on the River Thames. The children will all take a trip on the London Eye before going on a walk down The Mall to Buckingham Palace.
PSHE/RSE/ RE
In PSHE we will looking at jobs that we would like to do. We will be looking at different jobs and careers and how much different jobs are paid. We will also study the different skills required to get certain jobs.
In RE will be learning about Christianity. We will be studying the difference between Humanists and Christians views on why people are good and bad.
Art/ D & T/ Music
In Art, we will be basing our work on the artist Henry Moore. We will continue to make sculptures and artwork based on his work and evaluating what we have created.
In Design and Technology we will be making a Spaghetti Bolognese. We will find a recipe and develop it to make it healthier. We will then be making the Spaghetti Bolognese and trying our product.
During music this half term, we will be reflecting on our learning from this year. We will be recapping on the songs that we have learnt about this year and comparing and contrasting them using the correct musical terminology.
Spanish
In Spanish, we will be learning about food and drink. The children will be able name different foods and drinks and be able to say what their favourite food and drink is. They will also be able to ask others what their favourite food or drink.
PE day
We will continue to have PE lessons on Thursday and Friday this half term. During these lessons we will be focussing on Nimble Nets and Cool Core (Pilates). We will also look at how a healthy mind and healthy body link together.
Spellings/ Reading
This half term we will be learning how to spell words that end in –ly and words with the silent letter ‘b.’ We will then look at how to spell words that are off the statutory word list and consolidating spellings that we have learnt this year.
Summer 1

During this half term, the children will be completing two different genres of writing. They will be writing a narrative and a piece of persuasive writing.

This half term, the children’s work will have decimals focus. We will start by learning how to add and subtract decimals correctly before we move on to looking at how to multiply and divide them.
Geography/ History
Our focus this half term will be on History. The children will learn about Journey and be answering the question “What makes people go on a journey?” To begin with we will be looking at why people undertake journeys. We will then look at significant individuals like Walter Raleigh who made voyages during the Tudor times as well as looking at the journey of the Titanic. To finish we will learn all about the Empire Windrush and understand why refugees risk their lives making journeys today.
Science
Our topic for Science this half term is ‘Properties and Change of Material.’ In our learning this half term we will be completing lots of experiments. As a class we will be comparing and grouping together everyday material based on their properties including hardness, solubility, transparency, conductivity and response to magnets. We will look at how some materials will dissolve in liquid to form a solution and describe how to recover a substance from a solution. This will build on our learning in Year 2 when we learnt about ‘Uses of everyday materials.’
Education Visit
This half term, we will be visiting Blist Hill. During this visit, the children will be stepping back in time to visit a Victorian town. This children will be visit Victorian shops and cottages and meet craftspeople from the time. This visit will link with our ‘For the love of reading,’ topic and assist the children with their writing.
PSHE/RSE/ RE
In PSHE we will learning about how drugs common to everyday life affect health? We will be looking at the effect of drugs such as smoking, nicotine, alcohol, caffeine and medicine. We will learn about the difference between legal and illegal drugs.
In RE will be learning about Christianity. We will be discussing how Christians decide how to live following what Jesus would do. We will be looking at different texts from the bible such as teachings, parables, narratives and gospels to answer the question.
Art/ D & T/ Music
In Art, we will be basing our work on the artist Henry Moore. We will be making sculptures in his style of work.
In Design and Technology we will be designing a healthy meal. We will be looking at developing healthy recipes using foods that would come from a farm.
Our music lessons this half term will be based on ‘Dancing in the Street,’ by Martha and the Vandellas, which was written in 1964 and is one of Motown’s most popular songs.
Spanish
In Spanish, we will be learning about hobbies. The children will be able to say what their favourite and least favourite hobbies are. They will also be able to ask others what their favourite hobby is.
PE day
Year 5LS will be having PE lessons on a Monday and a Thursday and Year 5AM will be having PE lessons on a Tuesday and Thursday. During these lessons we will be focussing on being young olympians, fitness frenzy and being germ busters.
Spellings/ Reading
This half term we will be learning how to spell words that contain the ‘ough,’ letter string and words that are adverbials of time and place.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J.K. Rowling.
“Turning the envelope over, his had trembling, Harry saw a purple wax seal bearing a coat of arms; a lion, an eagle, a badger and a snake surrounding a large letter ‘H’. Harry Potter has never even heard of Hogwarts when the letters start dropping on the doormat at number four, Privet Drive. Addressed in green ink on yellowish parchment with a purple seal, they are swiftly confiscated by his grisly aunt and uncle. Then, on Harry’s eleventh birthday, a great beetle-eyed giant of a man called Rubeus Hagrid bursts in with some astonishing news: Harry Potter is a wizard, and he has a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. An incredible adventure is about to begin!”
During this half term, children will be learning all about the author of the Harry Potter books, J.K. Rowling, and writing a biography all about her life. The children will then write their own balanced argument. This half term, we will also be looking at Regna poetry.
White Rose Maths
This half term, the children will be learning about the perimeter and area of shapes. We will then move on to learning about Statistics. To finish, we will be learning all about shapes, including the different angles that they contain.
Geography/ History
Our focus this half term will be on Geography. The children learn about the Alpine region of Europe, how the Alps were formed and how homes are adapted to the climate. They will create a storyboard or digital book on mountain formation, design an Alpine home, and produce literature for visitors to the area using geographical vocabulary. The children will use their map reading skills to locate the Alpine region and the countries in which it is located. This unit builds on previous work the children have done on investigating their local area and other regions of the UK earlier this year.
Science
Our topic for Science this half term is ‘Living things and their habitat.’ During our Science lessons, we will be looking at the life-cycle of different animals and plants whilst also discussing sexual and asexual reproduction.
Education Visit
This half term, we will be visiting Harry Potter World. While we are there, we will get the chance to look around the studios in which the films were produced. We will be visiting Privet Drive as well as entering the great hall of Hogwarts. This visit links to our ‘for the love of reading,’ text and the work that we are doing in our English lessons.
PSHE/RSE/ RE
In PSHE we will learning about how friends can communicate safely. Within this topic, we will be learning about how social media can be used positively and what content is safe to share with family and friends.
In RE we will be learning about Judaism and why the Torah is so important to them. This will help the children to understand what Jewish people believe about God.
Art/ D & T/ Music
Monet will continue to be the focus for our art lessons. The children will study his work and create portraits and landscapes in his style.
In DT we will continue with our textiles topic from last half term, where the children started to design and create their own stuffed toy. This will help the children to build on their sewing skills.
Our song in music is ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.’ In these lessons we will be learning about the genre of the music and how it was composed. We will also continue to use instruments to play along to the song.
Spanish
In Spanish, we will be learning about where people live. This will include looking at the Spanish names for different types of homes and where they may be located. We will be able to ask each other questions about where we live, and what rooms we have in our homes.
PE day
Year 5LS will be having PE lessons on a Monday and Thursday and Year 5AM will be having PE lessons on a Tuesday and Thursday. During these lessons we will be focussing on striking and fielding as well as gym fit circuits.
Spellings/ Reading
This half term, we will be looking at words with an ‘or’ sound, using or or au. We will also be converting nouns or adjectives into verbs using the suffix –ise, -ify or –en.
Spring 1

Cosmic – Frank Cottrell Boyce
The book that we will be reading and focusing our work on this term ‘Cosmic’ by Frank Cottrell Boyce. Children will delve into the story of a space faring young boy who often gets mistaken for an adult. Liam is a 12 year old boy who is freakishly tall for his age so much so that he was mistaken for a 30 year old astronaut. And sent to space! We are going to be planning our own adventure stories and create newspaper reports to demonstrate our knowledge of the solar system.

Number: Fractions
Children will focus on developing their ability to multiply fractions by integers and also calculating a fraction of an amount.
Measurement: Decimals and percentages
The children will focus on equivalent fractions, comparing and ordering decimals and percentages. They will also explore decimals down to the thousandths.
Geography/ History
Geography – Changes in our local environment.
For our Geography focus, we will discuss and understand our local area and its significance. We will be exploring the British Isles and looking at the difference between a country, county and city. We will be researching all about a wide range of topographical features in our area. Such as mountain ranges, rivers and capital cities. Children will be able to recall features of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland.
Science
Forces
Within our Science focus this half term, they will learn about some famous scientist who changed our view of the solar system. We are beginning with gravity and how it shapes the world around us. We will study how those force can be measured and were proven to exist. The class will be carrying out different scientific enquiries throughout the half term.
PSHE/RSE/ RE
PSHE/RSE - How to manage our feelings.
This half term, our PSHE/RSE focus will aim to ensure that children understand how they can help in emergency situations. They will learn new ways of carrying out basic first aid such as treating burns, scalds, cuts,
bleeds, choking, asthma attacks or allergic reactions. They will explore the importance of staying calm, assessing the situation and then seeking an adult in a timely manner.
RE – Why do Christians believe Jesus is the Messiah?
During RE lessons, children will explore different biblical texts and develop an understanding of key vocabulary used throughout the Bible, such as Messiah, incarnation and prophecy. The children will be able to make connections between biblical texts and the idea of the Messiah being part of the ‘big story’ of the Bible. The children will eventually be able to link this idea of the Messiah to other previously discussed biblical stories to create a wider picture of how Jesus makes sense in the wider application of the Bible.
Art/ D & T/ Music
Art – Our artist focus is Monet
In the style of Monet we will look at the idea of perspective within art. The children will build up a range of skills such as using tone, shading and tint to create an atmosphere in their art work. Their art work will be based around creating a sense of emotion and feelings from their work by utilising colour for purpose.
D&T – Our focus is textiles, stuffed toys
Our DT will link directly to our ‘For the love of reading’ text this term. As the aim is to utilise a range of different sewing techniques to create a stuffed toy linked to ‘Cosmic’. Using the ‘blanket stitch they will create the casing for their stuffed toy and then be able to add decorations using other sewing styles.

Spanish
My House
This half term, during our Spanish lessons the children will be given the opportunity to discuss what type of house they may live in at a given time. While also developing their understanding of how to converse about rooms within their place of residence. This will then be combined with a range of fun Spanish activities to help recap previous learning and to work towards the aim of them being able to hold a short conversation about a topic in Spanish.
PE day
Our initial focus will be on creating and taking part in different Gym sequences. This will require the children to learn a variety of different steps that can be combined to form sequences of varying difficulty. They will also spend time focusing on different food groups and how much of an impact eating a balanced diet will have on their bodies. During out fitness topic ‘step to the beat’ the children will be given different beats such as 2,4 and 8 beat that will require the children to move to the beat.

The Chronicles of Narnia- The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis

During this half term, the children will be writing to entertain. They will be writing their own narrative based on this story and then writing a play-script which they will be able to perform to the rest of the class.

This half term, the children will start by completing a lot of work about fractions. We will be looking at equivalent fractions, converting between proper, improper and mixed number fractions and ordering and comparing fractions. We will then complete another block of learning about Multiplication and Division where we will be using the formal written methods to multiply and divide.
Geography/ History
Our focus this half term will be on History. We will be learning all about The Vikings and specifically be trying to answer the question of ‘Would Vikings do anything for money?’ To answer this, we will be looking at different accounts of raids that took place at Lindesfarme and looking at what life was like for the Vikings in their home land which made them want to leave. This will be followed by studying about when, where and why they decided to settle in Britain. We will then look at Alfred the Great to see if he deserved to be called a great before looking at quality of the evidence we have about the Viking times. We will finish our learning by writing our own Viking Saga.
Science
Our topic for Science this half term will be ‘Animals including Humans.’ In our learning this half term we will be looking at the changes that go through as they grow from babies through to old age. Within this we will be learning about puberty and explaining the different stages of growth and development.
Educational Visit
This half term, we will be going on a visit to York. Whilst on this visit we will be visiting The Jorvik Centre which is a Viking Museum. We will also be going to look at York Minster and taking a walk up The Shambles. To finish the day we will then go on a tour of York Castle.
PSHE/RSE/ RE
In PSHE we will looking at what decisions people can make with money. In these lessons, we will be looking at the importance of spending our money wisely and where we can keep our money to ensure it is safe.
In RE will be learning about what it means to be a Muslim in Britain today. To do this we will be looking at Muslim beliefs about the prophet and the Qu’ran and how they put their beliefs in to practice every single day.
Art/ D & T/ Music
In Art, we will be continuing to focus on William Morris, and creating artwork in his style including symmetry and tapestry designs. In D&T we will be creating our own bridges based on the research we have undertaken already this year. We will be seeing who can make the sturdiest bridge. In Music, we will be listening to and appraising different Jazz songs. We will be comparing them to each other and discussing our likes and dislikes.
Spanish
In Spanish, we will be learning about dates. The children should be able to say the days of the week and months of the year. They will then asking and answering questions such as What is the date today?
PE day
PE lesson for Y5AM will be on a Monday and Y5LS on a Tuesday. Both classes will also have a PE lesson on a Thursday.

In our spellings this half term, we will begin by looking at words with silent letters. We will then be looking at modal verbs and words ending in ‘ment.’ We will then be learning how to spell adverbs of possibility and frequency before revising statutory words for Year 5.

How To Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell.
Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third is a smallish Viking with a longish name. Hiccup's father is chief of the Hairy Hooligan tribe which means Hiccup is the Hope and the Heir to the Hairy Hooligan throne - but most of the time Hiccup feels like a very ordinary boy, finding it hard to be a Hero.
In the first How to Train Your Dragon book Hiccup must lead ten novices in their initiation into the Hairy Hooligan Tribe. They have to train their dragons or be BANISHED from the tribe FOR EVER!
But what if Hiccup's dragon resembles an ickle brown bunny with wings? And has NO TEETH? The Seadragonus Giganticus Maximus is stirring and wants to devour every Viking on the Isle of Berk . . .
Can Hiccup save the tribe - and become a Hero?
Our class text this half tern is How to Train Your Dragon. This story follows a young boy called Hiccup who does not look or act like the other Vikings in his tribe. Nobody expects high expectations from Hiccup until he captures the most deadly and dangerous dragon of them all: the Night Fury. We will be writing Character and Setting Descriptions before writing our own myths and legends saga.

We will start Year 5 by extending our learning about Place Value. We will then be moving this learning forward to help us with our Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division knowledge where we will be using both metal and written methods to solve given questions.
Geography/ History
Our learning this half term with have a History focus. We will be learning all about The Anglo-Saxons. We will build up our knowledge each week to help us to decide if The Anglo-Saxon age was a dark era or not. We will begin by finding out who The Anglo-Saxons were and why they decided to settle in Britain. We will then use archaeological evidence to help us to understand how they lived whilst here. By looking at the Staffordshire Hoard, we will work out its significance and what it tell us about Anglo-Saxon life before looking at other documents about them and their limitations. This should then allow us to build our own conclusions about if this was a dark age or not.
Science
Our focus in Science is ‘Earth and Space.’ Throughout this topic of learning we will describe the movement of Earth and the other planets in relation to The Sun and describe the movement of The Moon in relation to The Earth. We will look at the shape of the planets and discuss The Earth’s rotation to describe how we get day and night.

In our PSHE lessons we will be finding out about what makes a person’s identity. We will do this by looking at similarities and differences between people and then by looking at what individuality means.
In RE, we will be looking at Christianity and what it means if Christians say that God is holy and loving. We will do this by looking at different biblical texts and linking them to what Christian’s believe.
Art/ D & T/ Music
In Art, we will be focussing on William Morris, and creating artwork in his style including symmetry and tapestry designs. In D&T we will be researching and building our own bridges. We will be finding out what the different types of bridges are, and which style we should adopt to make our bridges the sturdiest. We will compete: who can make the sturdiest bridge to hold a weight? In Music, we will be listening and appraising ‘Livin on a Prayer’ by Bon Jon Jovi.
Spanish
In Spanish, we will be building on our numbers 21 -30 and asking and answering questions linked to presenting myself. We will be able to use Spanish dictionaries in order to enhance our vocabulary.
PE day
PE will take place on either a Tuesday or a Thursday.
Spellings/ Reading
Children will be take part in a weekly spelling test where they will be tested on spellings which they have learned over the previous week both in school and at home. We will start by looking at spellings from previous year groups before learning words on the statutory word list. We will then learn to spell words ending in –able and –ably.
Children access a banded reading book, appropriate to their reading ability. They also have the opportunity to choose a new book from our school library each week.
