Treasure Island
Our class text this half term—to promote a love of reading- will be ‘Treasure Island’ by Robert Louis Stevenson. Treasure Island" is the story of a twelve-year-old boy, Jim Hawkins, who finds a treasure map that belonged to a pirate, Captain Flint. Jim and his friends travel to a faraway island and meet ex-crew members of Captain Flint, who were also looking for the treasure and take Jim as a hostage.

Geography
In this unit, as the children move towards the end of their primary school careers and prepare to move to secondary schools, they will consider the past, present and future of their local area. This unit helps them see change as positive and to feel optimistic about the changes that lie ahead.

Electricity
Our focus for this term is Electricity. During this unit, we will look at how the brightness of a lamp or the volume of a buzzer with the number and voltage of cells used in the circuit. We also compare and give reasons for variations in how components function, including brightness of bulbs, the loudness of buzzers and the on/off position of switches as well as using recognised symbols when representing a simple circuit in a diagram. Within this, we will be working scientifically including: making predictions, collecting and analysing data as well as making conclusions based on what we have learnt.

During Art this term, we will be focusing on the artwork of Gustav Klimt. We will select colour for purpose and use colour to express feelings and to explore the use of texture in colour.

D&T – Come Dine With Me – Prom Preparation
We During DT, we will be designing a three-course meal for the Year 6 Prom. Within this topic, we will find a suitable recipe for their course and record the relevant ingredients and equipment needed We will create and follow a recipe, including using the correct quantities of each ingredient and explain where certain key foods come from before they appear on the supermarket shelf.

Spanish

In the Classroom
In Spanish, we will look at ‘In The Classroom’ and the different subjects. Within this topic, the children will learn how to say different subjects in Spanish as well as talking about what their favourite and least favourite subject is. In addition to this, they will learn how to say different items in Spanish that you would find in a classroom.

PE day

Nimble Nets, cool core (pilates) and healthy mind, healthy body. Our PE afternoon will continue to be a Friday.

Queen of the Falls by Chris Van Allsburg

The love of Reading text for Summer Term 1 is The Queen of the Falls, which is about a sixty-two year old widow Annie Taylor runs a charm school, right by Niagara Falls. When this starts to fail, she resolves to find fame and fortune by being the first person ever to go over the thundering waters of Niagara Falls in a barrel.
During this term, we will be writing an explanation text as well as completing some descriptive writing.

Geography – Protecting our Environment
Our focus this half term is a geography focus – Protecting the Environment. The unit will focus on the impact that humans are having on the environment and we will explore whether we are sustainable and have enough minerals to survive. We discuss how to protect our oceans from plastic pollution. Within this unit, the children will question if minerals can be used sustainable and understand the advantages and disadvantages of different types of energy.

During this half term, the children will visit Kibblestone Activity Centre. Here they will build on their resilience, as well as their team building skills in preparation for High School.

PSHE/RSE - Relationships
During PSHE, we will be looking at ‘Relationships’. We will look at the different types of relationships that a child can have and the impact that this can have on their everyday lives. They also look at modern day relationships and how relationships have changed over the years.
In RE the children will be focusing on the importance of Jesus and why Christians call Jesus a ‘King’, as well as understanding what he was like as the king.

Kensuke’s Kingdom – Michael Morpurgo
Kensuke’s Kingdom tells how a young boy, named Michael, mysteriously disappears the night before his twelfth birthday. The next morning, Michael finds himself washed up on a beach on a remote island with a bowl of water and some grilled fish next to him. He suddenly remembers the night before and memories flash past him as his faithful dog, Stella Artios, greets him with a big, slobbery lick! Michael soon realises that he is not alone…

Geography – The Amazon: South America
In this unit, children find out about the Amazon region of South America, considering what it is like to live in the region as well as how it is being damaged and how it can be protected.
The unit builds on previous work the children may have done in Key Stage 1 on rainforests and climate, and the units of work on North America and Climate, earlier in this series.

Within our Science focus this half term, we will recognise that light appears to travel in straight lines, to use the idea that light travels in straight lines to explain that objects are seen because they give out or reflect light into our eye. The children will also explain that we see things because light travels from light sources to our eyes or from light sources to objects and then to our eyes.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas – John Boyne
Nine year-old Bruno knows nothing of the Final Solution or the Holocaust. He is oblivious to the appalling cruelties being inflicted on the people of Europe by his country.
All he knows is that he has been moved from a comfortable home in Berlin to a house in a desolate area where there is nothing to do and no one to play with. Until he meets Shmuel, a boy who lives a strange parallel existence on the other side of the adjoining wire fence and who, like the other people there, wears a uniform of striped pyjamas.
Bruno’s friendship with Shmuel will take him from innocence to revelation. And in exploring what he is unwittingly a part of, he will inevitably become subsumed by the terrible process…

Within our History focus, children learn the key facts about WW2 and why Britain went to war in 1939. We will also use evidence the show the impact of WW2 on children in Britain and the children will also create their own WW2 propaganda posters.

Evolution and Inheritance
Within our Science focus this half term, we will recognise that living things have changed over time and that fossils provide information about living things that inhabited the Earth millions of years ago. They will also recognise that living things produce offspring of the same kind, but normally vary and are not identified to their parents. In addition to this, they will identify how animals and plants are adapted to suit their environment in different ways and that adaption may lead to evolution.

PSHE/RSE – How can the media influence people?
During PSHE/RSE lessons, children will learn how the media, including online experiences, can affect people’s wellbeing – their thoughts, feelings and actions. They will learn to recognise that not everything should be shared online or social media and that there are rules about this, including the distribution of images and to understand that mixed messages in the media exist (including about health, the news and different groups of people) and that these can influence opinions and decisions.

My Body
This half term, during our Spanish lessons, children will learn to speak about different types of shops. As well as this they will learn the following: o list the vocabulary for different types of shops and learn how to ask where people shop and where they can buy items. In addition to this, they will learn how to say: I would like… and use please and thank you in context. Children will broaden vocabulary and understanding by using a dictionary.

PE day

Our sport focus will be ‘Gym Sequences’ in which we will use and refine the following skills: flexibility, strength, balance, power and mental focus, co-operate with others, develop skills for movement, including rolling, bridging and dynamic movement and use own and others’ bodyweight to balance. Our fitness focus will be ‘Step to the Beat!’ We will demonstrate understanding of boxercise moves and how they can be linked together to make a routine. The children will select and use a wide range of compositional ideas and skills to create a routine. Our health focus will be ‘Healthy lifestyles – You are what you eat’ in which we will discuss and understand what healthy and unhealthy means and how to choose foods that promote health. They will learn what vitamins and minerals are and what they do for our bodies.

Autumn 2

A Boy Called Hope – A Boy Called Hope is a brave, bold and funny debut about family in all its shapes and sizes.
During this term, the children will be delving into the story and writing their own letter from the perspective of the main character – Dan to his father who he hasn’t seen since he was a little boy. We will also be spending some time looking at journalistic recounts which will be based on one of the main events within the story. Our poetry focus will continue to be Sonnets.

Geography/ History

Our focus this half term will be a history focus – The Greeks. In this topic, children will learn about aspects of political, social and cultural Ancient Greek life. They will focus on some areas in depth, such as the systems of government, religion and the importance of the Olympic Games. They will examine the legacy of the Ancient Greeks, and will have opportunities for further study of areas of interest. While they will gain an overview of the time period, the main focus will be on the Classical period. Elements of the unit can also be used in a study of post-1066 British history and the legacy of Greek culture. The children will utilise a variety of sources of evidence to develop their knowledge and understanding of the time period. Links will be made to prior learning on the nature of empires, particularly Year 4 Unit 2: Roman Britain.

Science

Our focus for Science this term is Animals including humans.
Within this topic, children will look at the human circulatory system – the importance of the different parts and how they contribute towards the transportation of oxygen and carbon dioxide. The children will also carry out an investigation in regards to the lungs and their capacity to take in oxygen. In addition, the children will learn about the effects of drugs, alcohol and lifestyle on the body.

Our RSE unit for Autumn Term 2 has a focus linked to Christianity. The children will define the terms ‘atheist’, ‘agnostic’ and ‘theist’. The children will also explain what religious and non-religious people believe about God and to understand where they get their ideas from. Finally we will look at the differing opinions of Genesis 1 and how it can be interpreted differently.
Our PSHE unit will look at how we can keep ourselves safe in the sun, the dangers of sleep deprivation and drugs (including legal and illegal).

Art/ D & T/ Music

Our artist for this term continues from last term and remains as ‘Andy Warhol’. Children will be looking to complete their own art in the style of Andy Warhol’s work.
In DT we are continuing our topic of ‘Creating a pop-up book’’ Children will use a range of mechanisms to create their own pop-up book based on the Mayans and The Greek which links to our history topics this term.
Our song for music this half term is “Classroom Jazz 2” by Ian Grey.

Our class text this half term - to promote a love of reading - will be ‘Wonder’ by R.J Palacio. Wonder tells the story of August, who was born with a facial deformity. He is about to start mainstream school. How will the children react to August?

In maths this half term, we will start by exploring place value for the first 2 weeks of Year 6. We will then move onto addition, subtraction, multiplication and division for the remaining 5 weeks of the half term. Each topic will recap previous learning, and move our learning on using problem solving and reasoning, linked to the end of KS2 SATS.

Geography/ History

History
In this unit, the children will explore the world of the Maya, and debate whether they should continue to be remembered today as a significant culture. The children will begin by learning about the lives of the Maya today, before focusing on ancient Maya architectural achievements, their religion and surviving writings. They will also study the possible reasons why the Maya city states declined after 900 AD, looking at conspiracy theories and considering whether everything they read online is reliable. They will consider the issues faced when studying a culture where only limited types of evidence are available, predominantly archaeological evidence.

Science

Our topic for Science this half term will be ’Living Things and Their Habitats. In our learning this half term we will be describing how living things are classified, are similar and different, including microorganisms, plants and animals. We will also be giving reasons for classifying plants and animals based on specific characteristics.
