Treasure Island
Our class text this half term—to promote a love of reading- will be ‘Treasure Island’ by Robert Louis Stevenson. Treasure Island" is the story of a twelve-year-old boy, Jim Hawkins, who finds a treasure map that belonged to a pirate, Captain Flint. Jim and his friends travel to a faraway island and meet ex-crew members of Captain Flint, who were also looking for the treasure and take Jim as a hostage.

Themed projects, consolidation and problem solving. Here we will be looking at different projects which incorporate a range of mathematical skills throughout various topics.
Geography/ History
Geography
In this unit, as the children move towards the end of their primary school careers and prepare to move to secondary schools, they will consider the past, present and future of their local area. This unit helps them see change as positive and to feel optimistic about the changes that lie ahead.
Science
Children will continue to learn about electricity. They will make circuits using electrical equipment and see how using different components affects the circuit.

Summer 1
For the love of reading text
The love of Reading text for Summer Term 1 is The Queen of the Falls, which is about a sixty-two year old widow Annie Taylor runs a charm school, right by Niagara Falls. When this starts to fail, she resolves to find fame and fortune by being the first person ever to go over the thundering waters of Niagara Falls in a barrel.
During this term, we will be writing an explanation text as well as completing some descriptive writing.

The units that we will be covering this term are as follows: Shape and Position and Direction before completing a week of SAT’s during the second week of May.
Geography/ History
Our focus this half term is a geography focus – Protecting the Environment. The unit will focus on the impact that humans are having on the environment and we will explore whether we are sustainable and have enough minerals to survive. We discuss how to protect our oceans from plastic pollution. Within this unit, the children will question if minerals can be used sustainable and understand the advantages and disadvantages of different types of energy.
Science
Our focus for this term is Electricity. During this unit, we will look at how the brightness of a lamp or the volume of a buzzer with the number and voltage of cells used in the circuit. We also compare and give reasons for variations in how components function, including brightness of bulbs, the loudness of buzzers and the on/off position of switches as well as using recognised symbols when representing a simple circuit in a diagram. Within this, we will be working scientifically including: making predictions, collecting and analysing data as well as making conclusions based on what we have learnt.
Educational Visit
During this term, we will be visiting Standon Bowers to take part in some team building exercises.
PSHE/RSE/ RE
During PSHE, we will be looking at ‘Relationships’. We will look at the different types of relationships that a child can have and the impact that this can have on their everyday lives. They also look at modern day relationships and how relationships have changed over the years.
In RE the children will be focusing on the importance of Jesus and why Christians call Jesus a ‘King’, as well as understanding what he was like as the king.
Art/ D & T/ Music
During Art this term, we will be focusing on the artwork of Gustav Klimt. We will select colour for purpose and use colour to express feelings and to explore the use of texture in colour.
During DT, we will be designing a three-course meal for the Year 6 Prom. Within this topic, we will find a suitable recipe for their course and record the relevant ingredients and equipment needed We will create and follow a recipe, including using the correct quantities of each ingredient and explain where certain key foods come from before they appear on the supermarket shelf.
Our song for music this half term is “Something Helpful” by Anna Meredith.
Spanish
In Spanish, we will look at ‘In The Classroom’ and the different subjects. Within this topic, the children will learn how to say different subjects in Spanish as well as talking about what their favourite and least favourite subject is. In addition to this, they will learn how to say different items in Spanish that you would find in a classroom.
PE day
The children will take part in PE lessons on a Tuesday each week with a focus of learning skills to complete ‘net’ games, alongside exercises that will help to build core strength.

This term we will have a focus on: abstract nouns, use of the hyphen, statutory list and double consonants.
Spring 2
For the love of reading text
Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo “I disappeared on the night before my twelfth birthday. Washed up on a desert island, Michael struggles to survive on his own. With no food, no water and only his dog for company, he curls up to die. When he wakes, there is a plate beside him of fish, of fruit, and a bowl of fresh water. He is not alone...” Children will look at writing a narrative story as if they were Michael and were stranded on a desert island. They will then look at poetry with a focus on Cinquain poems.
White Rose Maths
This half term children will be focussing on fractions, decimals and percentages along with shape, area, perimeter and statistics.
Geography/ History
Our afternoon lessons for this half term will have a geography focus. In this unit, children find out about the Amazon region of South America, considering what it is like to live in the region as well as how it is being damaged and how it can be protected. The unit builds on previous work the children may have done in Key Stage 1 on rainforests and climate, and the units of work on North America and Climate, earlier in this series.
Science
Our topic in Science for this half term is ‘light’. Here children will look at how our eyes help us to see light and how light travels in different ways.

In PSHE we will be focussing on how the media can influence people. We will look at the positives and negatives aspects of this and how it affects us. In RE we will be looking at what Christians believe Jesus did to ‘save’ people and how the Bible can be interpreted differently.
Art/ D & T/ Music
Our artist for this half term remains as ‘Escher’. Children will be looking to complete their own art in the style of Escher’s work. In DT we are continuing our topic of creating our own playground structures. Children will use various techniques to create their own model playgrounds. Our song for music this half term is “You’ve got a friend” in the style of the music by Carole King.
Spanish
In Spanish we will look at eating out in the café.
PE day
Tuesdays with a focus of striking and fielding, alongside a focus of gym fit circuits.

Spring 1
The Impact of War: What was the impact of WW2?
In Year 6 this half term we will be having a historical Topic focus. In this unit, the children will learn about the impact of WW2 on a global and local scale. They will focus on some areas in depth, such as changes to daily life, the battle of Britain and evacuees. We will examine the legacy of World War 2, and will have opportunities for further study in areas that the children have found interesting. To further deepen our understanding, we will be going on a class trip to Tatton Park for an evacuee experience.
Our class text this half term—to promote a love of reading- will be ‘The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas’ by John Boyne.
Within our English lessons we will be looking into the life of Bruno, an innocent young boy embroiled in the misery of World War 2 in Germany. We will be writing diary entries, character descriptions and a historical story.
Autumn 2
The Ancient Greeks
In Year 6 this half term, we will be having a historical topic focus.
In this unit, the children will learn about the life of the ancient Greeks. They will focus on some areas in depth, such as the Greek gods, Greek city states and the Ancient Olympics. We will examine the legacy of the Greeks, and will have opportunities for further study in areas that the children have found interesting.
Our class text this half term—to promote a love of reading- will be ‘A Boy Called Hope’ by Lara Williamson.
Within our English lessons, we will be looking into the life of Dan and his struggle to reconnect with his estranged dad. The children will be writing emails, letters, newspaper reports and Limerick poems.
Autumn 1
Why should we remember the Maya?
Our class text this half term—to promote a love of reading - will be ‘Wonder’ by R.J Palacio.
Within our English lessons we will be looking into the life of August and the struggles that he has to overcome as he begins school. The children will be writing their own biographies/autobiographies, diaries and balanced arguments.
