During this half term, we will be basing our learning on Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. We will be following Alice down the rabbit hole and discussing the adventures that she goes on. We will be developing our understanding of the text by writing our own diary entries and writing a persuasive advert for a tea party.

Coasts- Do you like to be beside the sea side?
In this unit, the children will explore well visited costal regions and understand why other parts of the coastline may not be visited. Children will also learn about a range of places within the UK with coastlines.
Science
In year 3 children will continue to learn about the topic of forces and magnets. The children will begin to understand magnets in more detail, understanding why they attract and repel and conducting experiments to see what materials attract and repel magnets.
Educational Visit
To support our learning in Geography we are visiting Llandudno to look at the coast. We will ride the Great Orme Tram up to the top of the Great Orme and look at the Welsh coastline. We will also walk along the promenade and look at the different coastal features. Finally we will have the opportunity to play on the beach, look for shells and rocks, and participate in a sandcastle completion.

In art our focus artist is Dan Mather, throughout the term the children will be focusing on relief and impressed printing and using textures and patterns like symmetry; whilst using ICT to help with designs.
D & T
In D&T the focus is cooking and nutrition; eating seasonally. The children will design, make and evaluate a healthy and nutritious recipe for a savoury tart.
Music
In Music this half terms focus is on western classical music, the children will listen and appraise, sing, play, improvise, compose and perform western classical music.
Spanish
This term the focus for Spanish is to say and write different types of weather and say which they like and dislike.
PE day
PE in Y3 takes place every Wednesday and Thursday. This half term the children’s sport focus is throwing and catching, the fitness focus is cool core strength and health focus is relationships with others.
Spelling
During this half term Year 3 will practise spellings with the ‘S’ sound but spelt with ci, ce and cy. We will also continue to practise words on the statutory word list.

Accidental Prime minster
When Joe tells a local news reporter exactly what he would do if he were the leader of the country, the video goes viral and Joe’s speech becomes famous all over the world! Year 3 will create their own adventure story based on the story. What changes will Joe make when he becomes Prime Minister? Also, Year 3 we will be writing a persuasive letter to persuade Joe to make interesting changes.

Our Local Area- Why is our local history important?
In this unit, the children will investigate our local area and consider which buildings are of significance and should be preserved. They will conduct their own research to study local listed buildings and make links to historical events from the time of the building’s constructions, as well as to their prior knowledge. The Big Finish provides an opportunity for the children to consolidate their learning into a creative piece of work, illustrating what makes a building special.
Science
In year 3 children are learning about the topic of forces and magnets. The children will begin by looking at how things move on different surfaces and investigate how friction works on different surfaces. Moving onto magnets, children will begin to describe the two poles on the magnet and experiment with attracting and repelling magnets.
Educational Visit
Tour of Stoke-on-Trent
Children will participate in a tour of Stoke-on-Trent, viewing the historical, buildings around Stoke-on-Trent. This will include Gladstone Pottery, Wedgwood, Middleport Pottery, Trentham Gardens and Barlaston house.

Macbeth Macbeths is tragedy written by William Shakespeare. It is though that this play was first performed in 1606. In year 3 we will read the modern day version of Macbeth, the children will see if the prediction of the three witches will come true for the King of Scotland. Are the witches correct when they say he will lose his throne? Writing for the children will allow them to explore the life of William Shakespeare and create a biography of his life, as well as writing their own play script.

Our World-Where on Earth are we? In an earlier unit, the children used several different representations of the world, or parts of it, without questioning them. In this unit, they will begin to understand the Earth better as a sphere, learning to rotate it mentally in 3-D. They will explore its representation in 2-D maps, and learn about the imaginary lines used (Equator, latitude, longitude, tropics and the International Date Line) to pinpoint global locations.
Science
In year 2 the children learnt that plants need water and light to grow. In year 3 they will develop their knowledge further and they will able to identify different function of plants and they will explore the requirements that plants need to grow and live. They will investigate how plants transport water and also explore how flowers play an important role in the life cycle of flowering plants, including pollination, seed formation and seed dispersal.
Educational Visit
Mary Arden’s Farm Children will visit the childhood home of Shakespeare’s mother. Children will participate in a range of activities linked to Shakespeare such as quill writing, Tudor dancing, acting, making Tudor style sweets, a tour the old farm and its many animals, making wattle and daub walls for a Tudor style house, watering the lavender garden and playing Tudor games.

This half term the children will be exploring different groups and communities that they belong to and explain how diversity is important and how it is shown through different communities and social groups whilst explore how we show respect towards differences. The children will also explore how communities can be beneficial to everyone.

ArtIn art our focus artist is Paul Klee, throughout the half term the children will be focusing on exploring how to close draw positive and negative shapes, use small eyed needles when sewing and to use textiles all in the style of Paul Klee’s artwork.

This half term the children are focusing mechanisms, exploring pneumatic systems and applying their understanding to design and make a pneumatic toy including thumb nail sketches and exploded diagrams.
Music
In Music this half terms focus is on The Dragon Song, whilst focusing on this song the children will listen and appraise, sing, play, improvise, compose and perform in relation to The Dragon Song. Spanish This term the focus for Spanish is to say and write the names of different colours in Spanish and to be able to say which colour is the children’s favourite and which colour is their least favourite.
PE day
PE in Y3 takes place every Wednesday and Thursday. This half term the children’s sport focus is brilliant ball skills, the fitness focus is Gymfit Circuits and health focus is body protectors and body changes.

Our spelling focuses are prefixes, using ‘super’ and ‘im’ covering the statuary word list and suffixes ending with ‘ion’.
Spring 1
Which was more impressive - the Bronze Age or the Iron Age?
We have another fantastic and fun filled half term ahead of us in Y3.
Throughout our English sessions, we will be following the adventures of the Iron Man, discovering how he was made and if he can save the planet form the Space-Bat-Angel-Dragon.
Our Maths sessions will allow us to develop our measuring skills.
During weekly Science lessons, our topic will focus on light and shadows, securing our knowledge of how we need light in order to see objects and that darkness is an absence of light. We will be researching how different shadows are created.
Our new topic learning takes us back to the Bronze Age and Iron Age, comparing the two different periods or history, whilst drawing conclusions of each.
Autumn 2
The Stone Age
Throughout this half term in English, Year 3 will be exploring the narrative of ‘Around the World in 80 Days’. We will be learning about challenges and adventures Phileas Fogg faced as he travelled around the World, when visiting each of the different countries on his map. Would he be able to prove his friends wrong?
Our new History topic takes us back to the Stone Age, becoming archaeologists as we discover evidence in the form of artefacts and monuments. We will look in more detail at the Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic Periods during the stone Age and look at how they changed over time. To support our understanding of the Neolithic period, we will look closely at the settlement of Skara Brae, and look at the site to understand what life was like in the Stone Age.
Autumn 1
Why is climate important?
We have an exciting half term ahead of us in Y3. Our role play has been transformed into a railway station and train, where passengers can meet to learn.
Throughout our English sessions, we will be delving into the adventures of Charlie Bucket as he enters Mr Wonka’s fun-filled chocolate factory. Awaiting us will be our description writing, with gob stoppers, wriggle sweets and a river of melted chocolate delight.
Our Maths sessions will allow us to develop our knowledge of place value, addition and subtraction.
During weekly Science lessons, our knowledge of rocks, soils and fossils will be extended, thinking about the different types of rocks and where fossils can be found.
Our new Geography topic learning takes us around the world, investigating the effects of climate change, exploring the different climates, climate zones and biomes. We will look in more detail at the driest and tropical biomes of different countries.
