For the Love of Reading 2025/2026

On 5th February 2026, we were delighted to welcome parents and carers of our Nursery, Reception and Year 1 children, to our All Aboard Phonics Workshop.The session provided a valuable insight into how phonics is taught in school, through our All Aboard Phonics programme. Parents explored the progression of learning, discovered how children develop their reading skills, and experienced some of the engaging activities used during daily phonics lessons. The workshop also offered practical ideas and strategies to help parents support their child's reading journey at home, building confidence and consistency between school and home learning.Thank you to everyone who attended and we look forward to continuing to work with our families to help every child become a confident and enthusiastic reader.

Our Reading Buddies in Years 3, 4 and 5 are positive reading role models for our KS1 and EYFS pupils. By sharing stories, listening to younger children read, and encouraging a love of books, our older pupils develop confidence, leadership and communication skills while helping to build the reading confidence of our youngest learners. These special reading partnerships create meaningful friendships, foster a love of reading across the school, and inspire children of all ages to enjoy books together.

In Year 1 we had a lovely surprise, For Old Bear with wide, excited eyes! We had a teddy Bear party!! We brought in our own teddy mate. Then story-mapped the tale — it was great! We drew each part from start to end, Old Bear’s adventure with every friend!

Nursery

World Book Day in nursery was a fun celebration of stories and books. The children explored a variety of different books and talked about which stories they enjoy the most. We shared our favourite books with our friends and discussed what we liked about the pictures, characters and adventures in them. We were even lucky enough to have a visit from some of our parents who came in and shared a book with us! The children enjoyed joining in with the story, laughing at the crocodile’s sneaky tricks and celebrating when the animals worked together. World Book Day helped the children develop a love of reading, explore new books and share their enthusiasm for stories with others. As a group, we read The Enormous Crocodile by Roald Dahl. The children were encouraged to look closely at the illustrations and predict what might happen next. They made thoughtful guesses about the crocodile’s tricky plans and how the other animals might stop him. This helped develop their imagination, listening skills and confidence in sharing ideas.

Reception

We looked at Roald Dahl’s story “The Giraffe, the Pelly and Me!” We sequenced the story into beginning, middle and end looking at the key events of the story. We then put ourselves in the roles of the characters and pretended to clean windows like the animals did!We role played working in a sweet shop and we made our own tall shop tower by drawing the key events from the story and piecing them together!

Year 1

Today, Year 1 enjoyed focusing on the book ‘The Twits’ by Roald Dahl. We created a wanted poster using revolting adjectives that we searched for in Mr Twits mud pie. In the afternoon, we created Mr Twits bristly beard using a variety of different materials.

Year 2

Our Year 2 pupils had a fantastic time celebrating world book day with activities inspired by Fantastic Mr Fox. The children began by creating their own fox masks, completing a reading comprehension and reenacting some of their favourite scenes from the story.In the afternoon, they made wonderful fox crafts before researching foxes and writing beautiful descriptions using the facts they discovered. To finish the day, the class enjoyed completing a Fantastic Mr Fox word search together.

Year 3

During World Book Day this year in Year 3, our focus was the BFG. We focused on one of our reading skills which was ‘vocabulary’ and immersed ourselves into how the BFG spoke during the story. His Gobble funk words got the children excited, predicting what they thought they meant and making their own up. We read the story, made up our own Gobble funk words, and then created our very own ‘Dream Jars’ just for the BFG. These contained dreams that the children wished for themselves and their families.

Year 4

Our learning in Year 4 today has been focussed on Roald Dahl’s famous book ‘Danny: The Champion of the World’. We have produced persuasive signs to convince people to stop poaching and we created woodland art based on the book. It has been great fun sharing stories and dressing up as our favourite characters!

Year 5

‘The Witches’ came to life in Year 5 today as we immersed ourselves in one of Roald Dahl’s famous books. We began the day on ‘Witch Watch’ and tried to identify the features of witches as explained in the text (wears gloves, large nostrils, strange eyes) but found this difficult as we discovered that witches often hide in plain sight! We then looked at how Roald Dahl creates atmosphere in his book and tried to recreate this in our own setting description of the Grand High Witch secret meeting.Finally, we put on our creative hats and designed a witch disguise mask (friendly on the outside, sinister inside) and created a witch’s spell to help the children that had been turned into mice!

Year 6CP

For World Book Day 2026, Year 6 CP became memory collectors just like Roald Dahl in his book Boy: Tales of Childhood. Instead of writing about his school days, we wrote about our own. First, we thought very hard about our funniest, strangest or most unforgettable moments at school. Some of us remembered silly mistakes, some remembered overseas adventures, and some remembered moments that made the whole class laugh. When we shared our memories with the class, there were some absolutely hilarious stories! Finally, we collected all of our stories together and made them into a class book. Our illustrated memory book will now stay in the school library, so everyone can read and enjoy our funny school memories for years to come.

Year 6SD
