For the love of reading text
In Literacy we will be learning all about ‘The Snail and the Whale’. The children will immerse themselves in the story and create their own story map. They will move on to letter and postcard writing, writing short sentences with known letter correspondences.
White Rose Maths
In Maths we will be exploring sharing and grouping. We will be looking at sharing objects with multiple groups of people. We will be looking at odd and even sharing up to 20 objects. We will begin to introduce the question ‘How many now?’ looking at adding more to an amount and taking some away.
Geography/ History / Understanding the World
In Geography we will be noticing features of the immediate environment and comparing them with previous environments (woodland and beach).
In History we will be comparing transport from the past and the present, talking about the lives of people and how they have changed.
Science / Understanding the world
In Science we will be looking at recognising the signs of summer. We will be looking at the changing seasons and how the natural world changes.
Educational Visit
New Brighton Beach
PSHE/RSE/RE/PSED
We will be looking at relationships and meeting our new class teacher. We will be talking about the importance of a healthy diet and looking after ourselves.
In RE we will be sharing special stories from different religions.
Art/ D & T/ Music/ EAD
In expressive arts and design we will be safely using and exploring a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function.

Each week our spellings and reading will directly link to the sounds we are teaching during phonics. We may repeat some spellings or reading books to allow children to confidently apply the phonics they have learnt. This half term we will be focusing on revising and consolidating phase 4.
Summer 1
For the love of reading text
In Literacy we will be learning all about the fairy tale ‘Little Red Riding Hood.’ The children will immerse themselves in the story and create their own story map. They will move on to retelling their own stories, writing short sentences, using capital letters and full stops correctly. We will be using these listening skills to allow us to develop our ability to ask and answer questions. We will be focusing on ‘why’ and ‘how’ questions. Throughout the half term we will be developing narratives and explanations of things.
White Rose Maths
In Maths we will begin to introduce numbers beyond 10. Looking at the patterns in numbers and counting on past 10. We will begin to look at simple addition questions and subtraction too. Understanding the different concepts of adding more and what happens then moving onto the same but taking away.
Geography/ History / Understanding the World
In Geography we will be identifying the similarities and differences between Antarctica and England, focusing on the people and how they live their lives.
In History we will look at how washing clothes has developed over time, looking at how they are now and how they were in the past.
Science / Understanding the world
In our Science aspect of Understanding the World, we will be planting our own seeds, looking at what they need to grow and observing the change over time. We will look at simple plant life cycles and draw each stage, adding simple labels.

PSHE/RSE/RE/PSED
In PSED we are going to be looking at rules and right and wrong. We will be playing different games and developing our turn taking. In RE we will begin to look at other religions alongside Christians and what they believe in.
Art/ D & T/ Music/ EAD
In Expressive Arts and Design we will be creating with constructions, building for a purpose and discussing our design. We will also be exploring and refining different artistic effects.

Spring 2
For the love of reading text
‘The Little Red Hen’
During Literacy we will begin to write a short sentence focusing on instruction writing. With support, the children will be able to use capital letters and full stops. We will confidently spell phase 3 words by identifying the sounds and then writing the sound and letter/s. We will also begin to re-read work to check it makes sense.
White Rose Maths
In Maths we will continue to use White Rose and their ‘small step’ ethos to help move our learning forward. We will begin to find 9 and 10. We will compare numbers to 10 and find one more and one less. The children will make compositions to 10 and look at number bonds to 10 using 2 and 3 parts. They will continue to explore even and odd numbers and they will find and make doubles to 10.
Geography/ History / Understanding the World
In Geography we will describe a farm environment (Amerton Farm visit). In History we will comment on images of farming in the past and present.
Science / Understanding the world
In Science we will recognise the signs of Spring and look at the effect of changing seasons on the natural world around them (trees). The children will draw a Spring tree. We will also understand the life-cycle of a chick and draw each stage.

We will confidently try new activities and show independence resilience and perseverance in the face of challenge (problem solving) This half term we will discuss healthy food options.
In RE will we look at why Easter is special to Christians and what the Easter story is about.
Art/ D & T/ Music/ EAD
This half term we will explore colour and colour mixing and we will select colour for a purpose. In Music, we will add instruments to rhymes – triangle, drum, shaker, tambourine. The children will move in time to music, expressing their feelings and responses.

Spring 1

Whatever Next – Gill Murphy
Open the book to an exciting adventure that takes a little bear to exciting new places! We will be using our imaginations to follow baby bear on his adventure to the moon!
This half term we will be using our phase 3 phonics to help us rewrite the story of ‘Whatever Next’.
White Rose Maths
In Maths we will continue to use White Rose and their ‘small step’ ethos to help move our learning forward. We will begin at looking numbers beyond 5, representing them, finding one more and one less and looking at odd and even pairs.
Geography/ History / Understanding the World
This half term, in Geography, we will be looking at our immediate environment, using maps to navigate our way around the school and drawing our own maps too.
In History we will be exploring how baths have changed over time, linking to our story ‘Whatever Next’.
Science / Understanding the world
This half term we will learn how to know about and recognise the signs of Winter. We will understand the effect of changing seasons on the natural world around them (trees) and we will draw a winter tree.

During PSED we will continue to develop our attention, following instructions throughout the school day. We will look at working collaboratively and sharing ideas with each other too.
In RE we will be focusing on Christianity and answering questions such as, ‘Why is the word God special to Christians?’

During art and Design and Technology, we will be working collaboratively to create rockets, like from our story “whatever next”. Once complete we will be sharing our creations with our peers, talking about what we like and dislike. In Music we will begin to sing different songs, either on our own or as a small group.

Autumn 2

‘Gruffalo Stories’
In Literacy we will be writing a label/caption to describe a character. This half term we will write a short sentence with support and begin to spell some phase 3 words by identifying the sounds and then writing the sound and letter/s. With support, we will re-read work to check it makes sense.
White Rose Maths
In Maths we will continue to use White Rose and their ‘small step’ ethos to help move our learning forward. We will look at numbers to 5, confidently creating compositions, and subitising too, and will be using our prior knowledge to help us build on our skills of finding 1 more and 1 less of a given number to 5.
Geography/ History / Understanding the World
Our Geography link is to notice features of the immediate environment – woods and local area. We will also find out that there are different countries in the world – Antarctica. Our History link is to make sense of their life-story and family history.
Science / Understanding the world
In Science we will focus on understanding changes in states of matter and to understand some basic forces (floating & sinking).

During PSED we will continue to see ourselves as a valuable individual and how to consider the feelings of others.
We will also build constructive and respectful relationships! This half term we will focus on why Christmas is special to Christians and we will recall what happens at a traditional Christian Christmas festival.
Art/ D & T/ Music/ EAD
We will play instruments loud and quiet e.g. triangle. This half term we will select from a variety of resources to collage and explore existing textures of objects and describes them verbally. We will watch dance performances and say how they make us feel.

‘The Three Little Pigs’
In Literacy we will be focusing on ‘The Three Little Pigs’. We will be exploring the text and using story maps to retell the story. We will be looking at setting descriptions, focusing on the different houses and what the wolf gets up to! We will be applying our phase 2 phonics in writing.
White Rose Maths
In Maths we will be using White Rose and their ‘small step’ ethos. We will be sorting, comparing and matching objects. We will be furthering our skills and knowledge around numbers 0 to 5. Looking at subitising, representing, finding one more and one less and looking at compositions of the numbers from 0 to 5 too.
Geography/ History / Understanding the World
This half term we will be understanding that we live in England and understand what it is like to live here.
Science / Understanding the world
We will be beginning to recognise the signs of Autumn and understanding the effects of changing seasons on the natural world around us by focusing on trees and how they change. We will observe these changes of the trees over the year.

We will be becoming more independent in meeting our own self care needs, including asking to go to the toilet and washing our own hands. We will be putting on our own coats and doing our own buttons and zips too.
