At Newstead Academy we aim to make learning fun.
Each half term every class changes its topic and all of the learning environments within each class are changed to represent the new topic. The role play areas make the central theme in each classroom. The children study all of the humanity subjects through this topic based approach.
Each class also engages in an educational visit to support the topic which further helps bring the learning to life.
This year’s overview of each topic in each class can be found here:
At Newstead Academy our classes follow the Letters and Sounds programme to teach phonics (early reading skills). Once children have completed this and are competent in their decoding skills, they progress onto learning spelling skills using the Rising Stars programme. The Oxford Reading Tree, Fireflies, Oxford Treetops, Lighthouse, Collins Big Cat and Dandelion Launchers schemes all scheme supports the development of reading skills.
